Houston Hosts Senior Leadership Reception

HOUSTON, TX: September 30th, YPE Houston held its Tristone Senior Leadership Reception and delivered YPE's most well-attended and highly regarded event to date. With a crowd of more than 400 in attendance at the Houstonian's Grand Ballroom, there was a dynamic mix of the energy industry's top executives and young professionals. The room seemed wrapped in conversation and speculation about the "bail out bill" and struggling financial institutions. That is, until Matt Simmons, Simmons & Co. International, stole the show with his keynote address. Mr. Simmons spoke about peak oil; the signs and symptoms, the possible effects, and the ever diminishing time that we have to act. A National Public Radio journalist was there to capture Mr. Simmons' address and its aftermath. One thing was certain, Mr. Simmons gave each person something to think about and discuss.

YPE Houston appreciates the support of Tristone and our other sponsors. We especially would like to send our sincere thanks to Matt Simmons and the executive leadership who represented the industry. There is no doubt that this event left a lasting impression on YPE Houston's membership.

Hurricane Ike

Midland/Odessa Beat the Heat Event

YPE Midland/Odessa hosts a joint event with other young professional groups in the area at the 1st Annual Beat the Heat Event for the Young Associates in the Permian Area. Collectively, we raised $2,000 for a deserving student at the University of Texas at the Permian Basin.

The Young Associates of Midland & Odessa Scholarship will go to a full-time student enrolled at UTPB who has earned 60 or more credit hours and has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, and is working at least part-time while attending school.

Our event had over 150 attendees and we would like to thank our sponsors: Exterran, Community National Bank and SouthTex Treaters; as well as MacLondon Royalties, Todd Barron Thomason & Hudman PC, Permian Court Reporters and Brockett & McNeel, LLP. MacLondon Royalties was the designated sponsor for YPE.

YPE Houston Branches Out West

HOUSTON, TX - One thing well understood by Houston dwellers is traffic and ever-increasing commute times as the sprawling city continues to expand. To make YPE events more convenient for members, the Houston branch recently came up with a "divide and conquer" strategy to address the growing number of energy companies located in Houston's Westchase district. While YPE Houston continues to host educational and social events in the city's center, they have begun to simultaneously host events west of the Sam Houston Tollway.

In February, YPE Houston hosted its second networking event at Watson's House of Ales. With over 60 young professionals in attendance, the event's success clearly addressed a need in Houston. Within the past 5 years, many of the world's largest energy companies have moved to campus layout offices in Houston's west side. These companies include: Shell, ConocoPhillips, and BP; who recently announced the company's world headquarters would be in Houston's WestLake campus.

YPE Houston plans to continue hosting west and central events to add choice and convenience and reduce road rage among members.

YPE Launching Three New Chapters

HOUSTON, TX – YPE is pleased to announce the launch of three new chapters in the U.S. – Denver, New Orleans and Shreveport, LA. Plans for chapter kick-off events are under way, and those interested are encouraged to keep an eye on the YPE calendar for posting of upcoming events.

The Denver chapter will be lead by Parker Heikes of Bank of Oklahoma - Denver Energy and Marcus Krembs of Sterling Planet. Heading up the New Orleans Chapter will be JD Estes of ExxonMobil. Bill Bowdown of Bowdon Natural Resources and Matt Huffty of Petrohawk Energy will lead the Shreveport Chapter.

Volunteers Needed for the Houston: Energy Center of the Future Competition

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston: Energy Center of the Future Competition is presented by the Harris County Department of Education. It allows Houston-area 8th – 12th grade students the opportunity to imagine how Houston will use energy in the year 2050. Participating students work in teams of four to research Houston, learn about the energy industry, and create scale models and public service announcements showing how their plans will make Houston a more economically-profitable, environmentally-sound, and consumer-friendly city.

The program is seeking volunteers to participate in Speaker Visits to Schools. One volunteer will be sent to each of the participating schools for a brief and informal conversation about Houston, the energy industry, and energy-related careers in Houston that our students might want to consider in the future. The program will provide each visiting speaker with a list of potential questions and topics for discussion and will facilitate the visits with the schools. The speaker visit will take about 30 minutes – 1 hour and will occur during the week of March 24, 2008.

YPE Ski Trip

This month our Calgary chapter hosted an organization-wide ski trip to Whitefish, Montana. Participants enjoyed mild weather, fantastic snow conditions, and were able to take in the local culture. The trip was a great success, it was a fun weekend at Big Mountain Resort providing the ultimate networking experience.

YPE Launches New Website

HOUSTON, TX - In early 2008, YPE unveiled its newly designed website. The new site will be more user-friendly and allow users to register for events online, view photos of past events, post messages to a YPE message board, search for jobs and stay on top of recent energy news.

The redesign was funded in part by the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA), one of YPE's major underwriters. YPE thanks RPSEA for their generous support and looks forward to an improved website experience for its members.

Austin Chapter Launch

Inaugural YPE Golf Tournament

Today YPE held its first golf tournament in Houston. An outstanding 26 teams participated, representing 64 firms in the industry. The weather was perfect, and a team of Exxon engineers took home first prize. Not only was the event a great opportunity to unwind and enjoy a Saturday, it raised awareness for both YPE and the event sponsor Kinder Morgan. In addition, proceeds from the event were given to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Houston.
