Despite recession, oil and gas remains promising for Gen Y

Houston Business Journal - by Casey Wooten - Friday, October 30, 2009

It may not be as hip as an Internet startup, but the youngest generation of oil and gas industry professionals say their jobs are rewarding and the long-term prospects are good.

According to a study of Generation Y employees by professional services firm Deloitte LLP, young oil and gas industry workers feel optimistic about their careers. Seventy-five percent of oil and gas workers say they feel very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the career paths offered by energy companies.

There is an abundance of long-term opportunity in the business, largely because of a huge generation gap between young and old. The report states that the industry suffered such a low influx of new workers during the 1980s and 1990s that only two generations — boomers and Gen Y — are represented in a major way. That gap has left the promise of rapid advancement for Generation Y.

“This younger generation is going to be called upon to handle a lot more responsibility at a younger age,” says Matt Gelotti, Houston director for the networking group Young Professionals in Energy. Formed in 2005 on the East Coast, YPE was originally meant to organize happy-hour networking gatherings, but has grown into a professional organization with 20 chapters worldwide. The group now puts on major forums and discussion groups as well as networking events. YPE’s Houston chapter alone has grown to more than 4,000 members in recent years.

Our mission is to provide a forum for knowledge sharing and camaraderie among future leaders of the energy industry.

The first YPE Chapters were launched in Houston and New York in 2005 by Stephen Cravens and Michael Teplitsky as a way to bring professionals in the industry together to network and exchange ideas in a comfortable setting.

The growth of YPE from 2 to over 8,000 members since the launch of the initial chapters underlines the need that was already present in energy cities across the globe.

SPECIFICS: Admission to the October 20 meet-up is free for YPE members.
On Friday, January 9th, 2009 in Dubai, YPE held an outreach event in an effort to reach out to our colleagues in the Middle East. The region is growing in importance both to the international tourism and commerce community, but also to the energy industry. More and more firms are choosing to headquarter in the region and accordingly, more of our peers are making the decision to try their hand at working in this exciting place. The event was well attended and sparked an interest in a more permanent presence in Dubai.

Stay tuned for more details, and in the meantime, encourage your friends in the UAE to sign up for YPE membership selecting Dubai as their chapter of interest.

YPE Mentioned in Two Publications

Alicia Dodge, Co-Director of YPE Houston, was quoted in the Houston Chronicle on November 29th, 2008 in a feature piece on the slowdown in the job market for young energy professionals in Houston. Please see the quote below and the full article at http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/biz/6138032.html.

"People have definitely started to adopt the mind-set that they’re cherishing the job they have and putting value on the seniority they can attain there. Some people who moved into new positions recently are a little bit nervous because all of the sudden they’re the new one. You know that saying: Last in, first out.” -Alicia Dodge, Houston Chronicle, 11/29/08

YPE as an organization was mentioned in Dan Pickering's Daily Read on November 28th, 2008. We highly recommend Mr. Pickering's Daily Read for anyone with an interest in the financial side of energy. Email Dan to be added to his distribution list at TPHEnergyResearch@tudorpickering.com. Please see the excerpt mentioning YPE below.

"Exciting – While not a stock – your members should know about YPE (www.ypenergy.org <http://www.ypenergy.org/> ) – with chapters in Houston, New York, and 18 other cities and over 5,000 members, it’s the most exciting non-profit organization for young leaders in the oil patch" -Pickering Daily Read, 11/28/08
You are encouraged to pass this note and information along to colleagues in the Philadelphia area so they may sign up for YPE membership and register for the upcoming kick-off event. Philadelphia is uniquely positioned in the global energy industry. It is home to one of the oldest energy companies, Sunoco Inc., which was grown from two oil leases in 1886 to one of the premier refining, marketing, shipping, and pipeline companies in America. Exelon Generation, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, is headquartered outside of Philadelphia. It owns and controls one of the largest generation portfolios in the country, roughly 33 gigawatts of generation. In addition to industry players, several local universities have an increasingly important role in the evolving energy space.
