BACKGROUND:

Young Professionals in Energy (“YPE”) is the first and only interdisciplinary networking and volunteer organization for people in the global energy industry – a place where bankers can connect with engineers, accountants with geologists and so on. Our mission is to provide a forum for knowledge sharing and camaraderie among future leaders of the energy industry.

YPE Boston to Table at BuildingEnergy10 Conference- Volunteers Needed!

YPE Boston will be tabling at NESEA's BuildingEnergy10 Conference's in March. We are looking for volunteers to staff the table at the Public Forum on Tuesday, March 9th from 4-9pm. We encourage you to volunteer whether you are available for the whole time or only an hour. It will be an excellent opportunity to promote YPE Boston and a great networking event as well. If you are interested in volunteering, please email Danielle Vasilescu with your availability.

BuildingEnergy is a three day conference put on by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association that provides a forum for architects, designers, planners, builders, policymakers, manufacturers, and installers to share ideas and look towards the future. This year the Public Forum is titled Case Studies of the Way Forward: Creative responses to the coming crisis. Moderated by author John Abrams, a panel of speakers will focus on three concentric circles of action and activism: community, home and practice.

Toronto Chapter Launch Event

Second Los Angeles Meet-Up A Success

LOS ANGELES (January 14, 2010) _ The second Los Angeles meeting of Young Professionals in Energy proved a success, gathering for the region's rising power executives for an evening of business discussions, dealmaking and several important speeches centered on the future of energy. The event, held January 12 at Geisha House in Hollywood, saw University of Southern California Energy Institute Managing Director Mark Bernstein speak about efforts to wean Catalina Island from fossil fuels, the region’s plans to transform our energy base and his experiences at the recent Copenhagen climate conference.

Representatives from Southern California Edison, Southern California Gas, UCLA Anderson School of Management, AxioPower, Sempra Energy, the Los Angeles Times and other top organizations were present at the event.

Despite recession, oil and gas remains promising for Gen Y

It may not be as hip as an Internet startup, but the youngest generation of oil and gas industry professionals say their jobs are rewarding and the long-term prospects are good.

According to a study of Generation Y employees by professional services firm Deloitte LLP, young oil and gas industry workers feel optimistic about their careers. Seventy-five percent of oil and gas workers say they feel very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the career paths offered by energy companies.

There is an abundance of long-term opportunity in the business, largely because of a huge generation gap between young and old. The report states that the industry suffered such a low influx of new workers during the 1980s and 1990s that only two generations — boomers and Gen Y — are represented in a major way. That gap has left the promise of rapid advancement for Generation Y.

“This younger generation is going to be called upon to handle a lot more responsibility at a younger age,” says Matt Gelotti, Houston director for the networking group Young Professionals in Energy. Formed in 2005 on the East Coast, YPE was originally meant to organize happy-hour networking gatherings, but has grown into a professional organization with 20 chapters worldwide. The group now puts on major forums and discussion groups as well as networking events. YPE’s Houston chapter alone has grown to more than 4,000 members in recent years.

YPE's Bay Area chapter visited green building materials company Serious Materials in Sunnyvale, California last week. YPE members Courtney McColgan and Kelsey Lynn coordinated the tour.

Kelsey is a principal at Firelake Capital Management, where she focuses on investments in the clean technology sector. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford with a degree in mechanical engineering, and also holds a Master's degree in Engineering and an MBA from Stanford.

Courtney is an analyst at Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and focuses on clean technology. She holds a BA in Chinese and Economics from the University of California at Berkeley.
